The field of empirical legal research encompasses empirical social science research on legal topics, on the one hand, and the use of empirical methods and results in legal thinking, on the other.1 Theoretical paradigms include statistical approaches, Big Data analysis of legal texts, formal logical methods, game theory, community decision theory, economic analysis of law, institutional analysis, sociological research of law, and critical theories. Methodological solutions include both quantitative and qualitative methods. Quantitative methods include experimental methods, questionnaires, descriptive statistical methods, statistical analyses, network research, and quantitative text analysis and text mining. Qualitative methods include interviews, focus group research, legal ethnography, qualitative case studies, discourse analysis, and archival research. Application areas are measuring the rule of law using indices, quality of legal decisions, impact assessment of legislation, judicial statistics and criminological sentencing impact studies. Also, empirical legal research incorporates a large variety of methods and theories, contributing both to the development of a legal science, and understanding legal practice better.2
