Law, legislation, and regulation were also emphasised in the title of this chapter, which as a starting point of the critical analysis of legal texts examines/criticises the normative framework (old and new), how they can systematically maintain unsustainable practices and how they support the exploration and adaptation of alternative legal tools. An example for this practice is the European climate law regulation, which turns political ambitions of achieving climate neutrality by 2050 into an EU legal obligation.1 By adopting the new regulation, the EU and Member States committed to net greenhouse gas emission reductions of at least 55% and lower than 1990 levels by 2030 (Fit for 55). The target has legal binding force and is based on an impact assessment carried out by the Commission. The previously adopted Birds Directive 2and the Habitats Directive can also be mentioned here.3

2 Directive 2009/147/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 30 November 2009 on the conservation of wild birds
3 Council Directive 92/43/EEC of 21 May 1992 on the conservation of natural habitats and of wild fauna and flora.
