Comparative law, as its name suggests, compares the legal institutions of different jurisdictions to identify best practices and potential weaknesses in addressing sustainability challenges. The key aspects of legal comparison are the following (i) identifying similarities and differences, (ii) understanding one’s own/other legal systems, (iii) relationship to other legal fields; with different approaches (iv) functional approach (practical outcomes, social responses and results), (v) methodological approaches (functional and analytical method), and finally (vi) practical applications, how to improve domestic laws based on other (inter)national law, best or good practices. For example, national laws and regulatory approaches to corporate environmental responsibility in different countries can be examined. An analysis of national regulations on extended producer responsibility (EPR) for electronic waste can identify the effectiveness of different approaches in promoting recycling and reducing the generation of electronic waste.1
