The Failure of Barings Bank

At the end of February 1995, the financial world was hit by a major shock with the failure of Barings Bank. Barings, known as a conservative bank, was one of the oldest financial institutions in the UK, with a history of more than 230 years. The financial catastrophe was caused by Nicholas Leeson, the chief trader in charge of futures contracts at Barings’ Singapore branch, who accumulated losses of nearly USD 1.4 billion on futures contracts on the Nikkei 225 index on the Singapore and Osaka stock exchanges.
