Evidence for realization of harmonic or disharmonic processes in words is found by examining a specific layer of the Hungarian lexicon – the Slavic loanwords (i.e., words with Slavic origin or words which have entered Hungarian via a Slavic language) and the new addition to the English loanwords. It is expected that in the reception of foreign words into a language, they are adapted and modified per the productive phonological regulations, processes, and constraints operating in the borrowing language. As a Finno-Ugric language with a finely developed harmonizing system, Hungarian offers an appropriate framework. The Slavic loanwords, a large number of which entered the language around the 10-15th centuries, provide rich material for investigating this implication of the vowel harmony. The data have been excerpted from etymological dictionaries and specialized literature. The primary source for the language material of Slavic loanwords in Hungarian is the comprehensive two-volume work of István Kniezsa (1974) A Magyar nyelv szláv jövevényszavai 1-2. Two fundamental aspects of the phonological adaptation allow tracking of the harmonizing processes' influence within the root: adaptation involving the occurrence of a new vowel in the sound structure of the word and re-configuration of the vowels in the root as a result of the perception of the lexical elements. The current investigation looks at the cases with additionally generated vowels integrated into the word form.
