Razor and blade. This model got its name because razor blade manufacturers very cheaply provided the razor as a handle and blade holder compatible with their own blades in the hope that customers begin to use razors and then regularly buy blades, which producers already sold at a profit. The model can be also interpreted for any initial pricing strategy consisting of investment requiring the use of short term ‘current assets’, typically in cash. An initial investment can then be very small, as in the case of the razor. This strategy only works if it is possible to create some form of attachment of the product required by the customer when using it. Other examples include low-capacity home use printers and some types of coffee machines.
