The terms dialect and accent are often used interchangeably, but in academic research, there is a clear distinction between them. “The term dialect refers, strictly speaking, to kinds of language which have differences in vocabulary and grammar as well as in pronunciation. The term accent, on the other hand, refers solely to differences of pronunciation” (Trudgill, 2000: 5). Meier (2012) defines the distinction as the following: “a dialect is a legitimate variant of a language, telling us about the regional and caste/class origins of the speaker and more. […] A dialect has its own vocabulary and grammar, as well as its own distinctive pronunciation” (p. 9). Arguably, “dialects and accents have social implications, and these implications are not triggered by lexical items only, but mainly by phonetic features” (Koch, 2009), therefore, for the purposes of this paper, the broader term dialect is more appropriate.

In audiovisual translation (AVT), both dialects and accents pose a challenge for the translator, especially if they are of direct relevance regarding the plot, humorous effects, or the likeability of or relatability to a character, among others. However, both subtitling and dubbing have difficulties conveying the deviation from the standard language. Diversion from the standard language usage can be due to social, geographical or age differences, can refer to the closer community the individual belongs to, or even a hobby they share with others (for instance, how the language and slang of computer gaming have influenced the players’ speech). The translation has to – if possible – convey as much of this metalinguistic information as possible. Through the example of the popular television series Poldark (2015–2019), we attempt to illustrate how Hungarian dubbing approaches the question of dialectal differences on the screen.
