9. Translating dialects in audiovisual translation in Hungary

In Hungarian AVT, there is a decided preference for dubbing as opposed to subtitling (Hortobágyi, 2010), even though since Hortobágyi’s article was published, the proportion of subtitled foreign movies seems to have increased, probably on the one hand, due to the spread of online movie providers and the ample number of foreign audiovisual content available to most, on the other hand, due to the increasing number of people speaking at least one foreign language, and, thirdly, due to the huge difference of costs between dubbing and subtitling. However, in television, dubbing is still the predominant way of conveying foreign-language audiovisual content, that is why the present paper focuses on dubbing.

As Sáfár (2015) mentions, in AVT, the translation of regional dialects within a language is practically taboo. In most cases, finding equivalence with a target-language dialect is either impossible, or has an alienating effect on the audience (Sáfár, 2015). Furthermore, in the Anglo-Saxon world, regional dialectal differences play a far more important role than in Hungary. Even though there certainly exist many non-standard Hungarian dialects within the country, and native speakers are aware of the fact that these differ from the standard version, the characteristics of the regional dialects are not nearly as well-known by the average Hungarian native speakers as the English variations are among the native speakers of English. “[M]ost speakers in Hungary have no dialect awareness in contrast to numerous speech communities in the world” (Parapatics, 2020: 1).

What could nevertheless resemble English regional varieties in Hungarian would be the different regional varieties Hungarians use in the countries bordering Hungary, where a relatively representative number of Hungarian minorities speak a Hungarian version that has developed as a result of the co-habitation of majority and minority languages. This approach could be the scope of further investigation.
