The role of bibliographic descriptions began with the appearance of biographies of scholars and writers (biobibliographies) with the broadest definition of the term ‘author’ (literally means ‘writer’ in Hungarian). After the English (1548), Italian (1550), German (1582), and French (1584) beginnings, the conditions for this were met in Hungary in 1711, although the work of the distinguished author from Selmecbánya (Ger. Schemnitz; Slk. Banská Štiavnica) was published by the Frankfurt am Main-Leipzig printing house, processing the biographies and works of about 269 Hungarian scholars in Latin.1

Published in Hungarian in 1766 (printed in 1767), it encompassed the lives and works of nearly 500 Hungarian authors as the first biographical encyclopedia and bibliography in the Hungarian language.2

In Anglo-Saxon terms, the Chicago style3 may be useful; or the APA style4 may be considered if we are working with English-language sources. These reference systems differ greatly from Hungarian customs. (Name order, first name abbreviation, a comma after the name instead of a period, but a colon between the title and the subtitle). However, no single reference system can be expected to answer all questions.
