A central question of our research is how sub-competencies and performance measures are related. In the human translator group, only one significant correlation could be observed: those with higher beliefs about translation scores tended to make fewer accuracy errors. This suggests that those with more mature views on translation produce more accurate translations. A possible explanation is that more mature beliefs are accompanied by more appropriate translation strategies, which may account for performance differences at this stage of development. The fact that the correlation is very strong indicates that beliefs about translation act as a key subcompetence at this stage.

In the PE group, numerous significant correlations were found. Grammar competence, beliefs about translation and thematic knowledge all showed moderate to strong, significant negative correlations with total error numbers. In addition, beliefs were related to accuracy and style errors, and thematic knowledge to fluency and style errors. In general, it looks like the three competencies included in the study (language, beliefs about translation, and thematic knowledge) all contribute to post-editing performance. It should also be pointed out that Beliefs about translation and thematic knowledge seem to dominate at this stage of development, as they exhibit stronger associations with a greater number of error categories.

In the second data collection wave, significant correlations were identified between time on task and accuracy error numbers in the HT group and between time on task and terminology error numbers in the PE group. In both cases, the more time students spent on the task, the fewer errors they made. This is a very important finding, because it indicates that investing time will pay off in different ways in the two work modes. A possible explanation for this is that the extra time is spent on different sub-tasks in post-editing and in translation, but this should be double-checked by analysing process data.
