The Szeged Translation and MT Post-editing Competence Research Centre launched a comprehensive research project in 2019. The project aimed to investigate the function of individual elements of translation competence in human translation (HT) and in the post-editing of machine translation (PE) (Figure 7). Translation competence was conceptualised in line with the PACTE model, and a mixed-method design was used to answer the research questions (see below). The study operationalised and included the following variables: source language skills, thematic knowledge, declarative knowledge of translation, source language text type, translation experience, work mode (HT or PE), and students’ perceptions of the advantages and disadvantages of working with HT or PE.

The present volume analyses a specific part of the data collected within the framework of the Szeged project; consequently, the methodology of the parent project will be described first. Then the research questions of the longitudinal sub-project, together with methodological issues relevant for the longitudinal analysis, will be presented.
