Institutions of Economic Policy

A Comparative Analysis

Life in a complex web of constraints and incentives called governance

Official bodies and government institutions are around us, and one cannot get on in business without a proper knowledge of them. But this is not enough: you must also care about other constraints of a less formal character. There is a professional association in your industry, and you are a member of it. This organisation is not a part of the government, still its recommendations or rulings have an impact on you. You must fork out an annual due, but membership may well pay off as it goes with incentives and social advantages. Doctors, lawyers, and architects are members of such associations. Membership is voluntary in some countries, whereas in other jurisdictions you must be a member by law to practice your profession. Guilds have been known since the Middle Ages. Those days are gone, but self-governing bodies are around to protect you, and also to restrain you. It is in your interest to be aware of the recommendations of the professional associations.
