Epithelium (epithelial tissue)
The main characteristic of epithelial layer is that cells are always contiguous with one another and they are usually joined with cell-to-cell junctions. These junctions provide not only firm lateral adhesions between cells but also attach the cells to the basement membrane. The basement membrane is a protein- and polysaccharide rich layer that underlies the basal surface of epithelial tissue. Epithelial tissue contains no extracellular matrix. Obviously the intercellular space is minimal without nerves or blood vessels: epithelium is a so called avascular tissue. Therefore nourishing of epithelial cells is possible only by diffusion from the connective tissue layer that is usually settled under the epithelium.
