Cultural and sports activities have been an integral, though scarcely researched aspect of the university’s history. The university houses two public collections. The pre-1948 antecedent institutions had already maintained a library with a collection of tens of thousands of books in Szerb Street. This it was not developed in a conscious manner, but rather on an ad hoc basis. Library supply and library service in the modern sense of the terms began in 1949 under the management of a director general in the central building of the Marxist university. The Central Library soon developed into the most significant reference library of Hungary. The Library has for the past decades integrated department libraries, making its online and offline services available for the various research projects undertaken at the university. Since 2007 the Library has set up a history research unit. The University Archives, created in 1988, is in charge of collecting and processing the historical documents of the university, primarily relying on the mandatory depositing of official documents by the various organisational units. In 2014 the Archives staged the university history exhibition that has become a permanent display. Just like the Library, the Archives has in the last two decades regularly participated in the national digitisation programme of public collections.
