Anxiety, Coping, and Flow

Empirical studies in interactional perspective

Methods

A Flow Inquiry was used to measure the daily frequency of the optimal experience and the anti-flow experiences (anxiety, boredom and apathy). The questionnaire was our own construction using some elements of Csíkszentmihályi and Larson’s Flow Questionnaire (Csíkszentmihályi and Larson, 1984) by permission of the authors. The method is a situation-reaction questionnaire, which examines the frequency of flow, boredom, apathy and anxiety experiences in four different life situations: at school, in the family, in the companion of friends and during lonely activities. Applying the inquiry allows to characterize and rate the life situations on the basis of flow and antiflow experiences and to register what the person’s bias is to live boredom, apathy, anxiety (antiflow) and optimal experiences, to get himself/herself into the state of flow. It can be also studied separately how often the adolescents get to the channel of experiencing flow, boredom, apathy and anxiety in the different life situations. The subjects indicate the rate of their different experiences (flow, boredom, apathy, anxiety) on a four-point scale in the four life situations (school, family, friends, alone).

This volume follows a decade of empirical research on how we can cope with the negative effects of life including our own negative emotions and feelings of incompetence, and how we can mobilize consciously – always remaining in reality – what environmental and inner personal sources to change our stressful world into a place enriching our self and development with optimal experiences.
