Management Consultancy in Central and Eastern Europe

Consultancy in a Global Context

Theory of Cultural Dimensions

Some authors examine the impact of national culture on the use of professional services, and more specifically management consulting services. As the use of professional services involves significant uncertainties, especially for the client, it can be assumed that the attitude towards uncertainty may influence the development of the demand for advice. Many researchers (Barthélemy, 2019; Pelczné & Szadai, 2004; Pemer et al., 2014) are concerned with the relationship between cultural characteristics and the demand for counseling. They observed that organizations operating in individualist cultures with high uncertainty avoidance index are less likely to use professional services than those in cultures characterized by low uncertainty avoidance and collectivism. The results obtained in this field contribute to the understanding of the cultural environment and organizational behavior, more specifically the demand and purchase habits for professional services. It also empirically illustrates the differences in procurement practices observed in different cultural contexts. According to several studies, an understanding of the characteristics of foreign markets can be aided by the typology of national cultures, one of the most interesting and widely used of which is the dimensions of Hofstede culture.
