Porter’s Business Chain Model

Porter’s (1985) business chain model examines the evolution of added value generated by each element of a business process throughout the enterprise and value creation activity. The analysis distinguishes between the main value-creating key processes (purchasing, stockpiling, manufacturing, sales, after-sales support, etc.) and supporting processes (general administration, financing, human resources management, information technology, etc.). Each business chain contributes to the value creation process to varying degrees and has a different place in the cost structure.
