Mobility and active lifestyle in tourism

Sports facilities as multifunctional tourist attractions

Nowadays, a sports stadium can fulfil many functions from a tourism point of view. A good example of this is the work of Edensor et al. (2021) who, after examining a large number of TripAdvisor reviews (over 23,000) of football stadiums in England in 2019-2020, found that a stadium now performs four key sports tourism functions, based on consumer demand. These are the stadium as a venue for events, the stadium as a museum, the stadium as a hospitality venue, and a higher-level purpose, the stadium as a place of pilgrimage and a place of belonging to a community, is now emerging. It can be argued that a developed infrastructure, if it wants to become part of the sports tourism circuit, in its own right, must be able to meet and respond to the needs of these areas. These are also linked to the scope of the attraction, because if we consider the attraction as a place of pilgrimage, it implies a push, a higher order, intangible motivation that makes travellers more willing to travel. Basically, the sport, due to the nature of the event, can be described more as a pull motivation, but we can see that if we look at the attraction from a more holistic perspective, intrinsic push motivational elements are already present.

Passenger transport merging different sub-sectors such as urban and road transport (e.g., coaches, automobiles, public transport), rail transport (e.g., luxury tourist trains), water transport (e.g., maritime or river cruises), and aviation (e.g., airlines, special air transport options – such as ballooning or hang gliding) is the cornerstone of tourism. The strong relationship between the fields of tourism requires an understanding of the theoretical background of tourism. In the first part of the book, the essentials of tourism, transport, and their interactions are presented. The book also focuses on innovative transport solutions (e.g., automation, shared mobility) that could transform passenger transport and tourism in the near future. In the second part, the characteristics of active tourism, one of the most emerging areas of recreational tourism are presented in detail. Based on the current trends, the conceptual framework, the supply and demand side of recreation and sport tourism are described in detail. The main trends, drivers and achievements of sports tourism are illustrated by Hungarian and international examples.
