Cultural, creative and culinary tourism

Cultural tourism

As the vast majority of tourists come into contact with some form of heritage during their travels, most trips include some element of cultural tourism. However, this is only true if we use a broad definition of cultural tourism: a cultural tourist is “any person who visits cultural institutions or places away from home, such as museums, archaeological and heritage sites, operas, theatres, festivals or architectural sites” (Stylianou-Lambert 2011, 405). In a narrower sense, it is a leisure trip of special interest motivated solely by cultural interests, such as “excursions and visits to historical sites, visits to museums and galleries, participation in art performances and festivals, and visits to communities’ way of life” (Medlik 2003, Irimiás 2018). Expected cultural experiences, particularly education and curiosity about other people and their cultures are the primary motivation for travel, rather than a secondary, incidental or ancillary motive for travel (Douglas et al. 2001). Research shows that these tourists are better educated than the average tourist and are particularly interested in the authenticity and location of the cultural experience (Jászberényi et al. 2018).

Cultural tourism and creative tourism are the most dynamically expanding areas of the tourism sector. In the theoretical chapter we review the definition of the two trends, the characteristics of the demand and supply side and clarify the concept of a cultural tourism product. We overview the development strategies that have defined the global museum market in recent decades and discuss the role of museums in the revitalization efforts of cities. You can also get a deeper insight in the operation of colourful science and transport museums. Afterwards, culinary tourism chapters examine consumer behaviour in food tourism and its link to social media which is followed by an overview on the supply side, a new typology of attractions in culinary tourism.
