Cultural, creative and culinary tourism

National Art Museum of China (NAMOC)

The new building of the state-run NAMOC, the National Museum of China, was designed by French architect Jean Nouvel. His vision won the jury’s approval in the international competition. The world-famous star architect also designed the Louvre Abu Dhabi, which has already been discussed. Nouvel took calligraphy as his starting point, the brushstroke that Chinese students practise for six months, and he believes that in this one movement, the whole of China’s culture, the energy of painting and writing, is contained, and it is from this symbolic movement that the design for the museum building emerged. The new museum is part of a plan to transform Beijing’s central district into a cultural quarter. It was launched after the construction of the Olympic Stadium (2008), known as the “Bird’s Nest.” The redeveloped district will house the world’s most extensive library and music center, and a museum.

We overview the development strategies that have defined the global museum market in recent decades and discuss the role of museums in the revitalization efforts of cities. You can also get a deeper insight in the operation of colourful science and transport museums. Afterwards, culinary tourism chapters examine consumer behaviour in food tourism and its link to social media which is followed by an overview on the supply side, a new typology of attractions in culinary tourism.
