Cultural, creative and culinary tourism

Introduction

This chapter introduces global trends influencing museums in general, but mainly focusing on science and transport museums as future-oriented attractions, and some example case studies. Transport, travelling, technology and technical innovation nowadays have a more significant effect on our lives than ever. Science and transport museums showcase the birth of this modern world of ours. The attention towards the rapidly changing technological, social, and scientific questions is increasing not only in the news and online space, but it is reflected in the number of visitors to those museums. Science and transport museums are characteristically among the most visited museums worldwide. In those institutions, the demand for feeling nostalgic and understanding technological development (edutainment, demonstrations, labs) appear simultaneously. The museums may be national or regional institutions, but there is a significant proportion of museums maintained by companies in the specific genre of science and transport. We could observe some excellent investments and projects at a wide scale of strong edutainment-purpose (education and entertainment) science centres, the colourful science museums, the transport museums that rely on nostalgia a great deal, or the brand-focusing company museums and visitor centres worldwide. At the same time, those museums, despite their popularity and a high number of visitors, must face serious challenges to preserve and reinforce their role among the excellent attractions of the future.

Cultural tourism and creative tourism are the most dynamically expanding areas of the tourism sector. In the theoretical chapter we review the definition of the two trends, the characteristics of the demand and supply side and clarify the concept of a cultural tourism product. We overview the development strategies that have defined the global museum market in recent decades and discuss the role of museums in the revitalization efforts of cities. You can also get a deeper insight in the operation of colourful science and transport museums. Afterwards, culinary tourism chapters examine consumer behaviour in food tourism and its link to social media which is followed by an overview on the supply side, a new typology of attractions in culinary tourism.
