Cultural, creative and culinary tourism

Different types of science and transport museums, and a distinctive genre: Company Museums

In the sector of science and transport museums, the museums and exhibitions can operate under different kinds of maintenance and ownership. The oldest science and transport museums were based on the material of world exhibitions, national exhibitions, or trade fairs (e.g., the Science Museum in London, the Hungarian Museum of Transport in Budapest). Regional museums focus on a particular region (e.g., the Riverside Museum in Glasgow, the Coventry Transport Museum). Additionally, there are company museums, which are particular types of exhibitions with science and transport related themes. Those are usually brand-museums, with a significant marketing value, as certain companies devote substantial funds to present their past, or in the case of younger enterprises, they invest in presenting their progressive, innovative abilities (Irimiás 2018). The companies can be car manufacturers (e.g., BMW, Hyundai, Škoda, Porsche, Volvo, Ferrari), aircraft factories (e.g., Dornier, Airbus), and even state-owned transport companies (e.g., the Train World in Belgium, the Hungarian Railway Museum, the Qantas Founders Outback Museum in Australia), or municipality-owned urban public transport companies (e.g., Urban Public Transport Museum operated by the Budapest Transport Limited, London Transport Museum operated by the Transport for London). The visitor centres of factories and plants are also worth mentioning – although those have a traditional museum character to a lesser degree, they much rather have touristic and marketing value. (e.g., Energoland – the visitor centre of the nuclear power plant in Mochovce, the Microsoft Visitor Center). Finally, we mention that there are significant private collections (e.g., Udvar-Hazy Center in Washington, the Tiriac Collection in Bucharest, the Koç Museum in Istanbul, the Internationales Maritimes Museum Hamburg in Hamburg).

We overview the development strategies that have defined the global museum market in recent decades and discuss the role of museums in the revitalization efforts of cities. You can also get a deeper insight in the operation of colourful science and transport museums. Afterwards, culinary tourism chapters examine consumer behaviour in food tourism and its link to social media which is followed by an overview on the supply side, a new typology of attractions in culinary tourism.
