Cultural, creative and culinary tourism

Summary

With their high number of visitors, science and transport museums can grasp contemporary global trends in today’s period of accelerated technological development. Although museums might grow increasingly comfortable due to those high numbers, they need to become places of innovation and interactivity concerning society’s issues and become important actors in the discourse between science and society. They do not need to disown the significance of nostalgia when creating their programs and exhibitions, but besides their technology-focused approach, they need to put a higher emphasis on social aspects. Related to the fourth industrial revolution and the challenges and global trends of our days, they might play a significant social role. Besides their traditional educational and demonstrational character, they may become important institutions of the society in the innovative development affecting our everyday life through a bold undertaking to deal with the tough questions of the future. The state-owned, regional, and company museums may even learn from each other at best (marketing approach, collection management methods, exhibition and architectural solutions, etc.); thus, they can even better maintain and reinforce their role in the world of museums and the competition for the leisure time of the visitors becoming ever more valuable, and in the circle of cultural sights and unique attractions.

Cultural tourism and creative tourism are the most dynamically expanding areas of the tourism sector. In the theoretical chapter we review the definition of the two trends, the characteristics of the demand and supply side and clarify the concept of a cultural tourism product. We overview the development strategies that have defined the global museum market in recent decades and discuss the role of museums in the revitalization efforts of cities. You can also get a deeper insight in the operation of colourful science and transport museums. Afterwards, culinary tourism chapters examine consumer behaviour in food tourism and its link to social media which is followed by an overview on the supply side, a new typology of attractions in culinary tourism.
