Cultural, creative and culinary tourism

Food festivals and gastronomic events

Food-themed festivals and mass events are the core of the gastronomic tourism industry and have long been considered a key factor in improving the competitiveness of destinations (Yang et al. 2020). Nowadays, in order to develop food tourism, destination marketing organizations are actively seeking ways to turn the destination into a place for food and launch a series of promotional activities and events. Especially gastronomic festivals are often used as a branding tool in the food travel industry (Irimiás 2018; Sotiriadis 2015). Therefore, recent studies focused on how the cooking festival can create a solid food-related image for the host city or region and attract customers repeatedly. In conclusion, quality and value of culinary festivals as an important stimulating factor are essential in shaping a good destination image and increasing destination loyalty (Yang et al. 2020). For example, Macao has remarkable experience in hosting large-scale culinary events such as the Macao Food Festival; a landmark event with several local and international chefs as well as major hospitality specialists from Asia and Europe (UNESCO 2018).
