Cultural, creative and culinary tourism

Cooking classes and workshops

Authentic local food of a destination plays an essential role to satisfy the curiosity of gastronomic tourists (Kalenjuk et al. 2015), who are participating in different cultural experiences closely related to local people and the land, while culinary tourism is still focused on finding and enjoying unique and unforgettable experiences related to food even by the opportunity to cook local dishes (Santich 2004). Under the trend of co-creating culinary experiences, tourists are increasingly eager to participate in food production and preparation, and cooking learning is incorporated into innovative travel experiences (Richards 2011). As Luoh et al. (2020) states, the so-called cooking learning tourism (CLT) is an innovative subtype of culinary tourism representing a growing and highly marketable phenomenon among food tourists.

Cultural tourism and creative tourism are the most dynamically expanding areas of the tourism sector. In the theoretical chapter we review the definition of the two trends, the characteristics of the demand and supply side and clarify the concept of a cultural tourism product. We overview the development strategies that have defined the global museum market in recent decades and discuss the role of museums in the revitalization efforts of cities. You can also get a deeper insight in the operation of colourful science and transport museums. Afterwards, culinary tourism chapters examine consumer behaviour in food tourism and its link to social media which is followed by an overview on the supply side, a new typology of attractions in culinary tourism.
