Cultural, creative and culinary tourism

Food-related museums and theme parks

Food-related museums, exhibitions and theme parks showcasing food culture are popular especially in destinations world-famous for food like France, Italy and Spain. Several examples of food museums can be found in the United States and Japan as well. Both scholars and professionals emphasize the role of food-museums as agents of education, preservation and cultural heritage interpretation, while they have rarely paid attention to tourism-related issues (Garibaldi–Pozzi 2020). In contrast to natural and historical museums, the focus of these museums is on products and their interpretation, telling the story of the food, its preparation, celebrations, social and cultural significance. Museums may display plant species, raw materials and finished products, recipes, historical documents, and images of rural life. In addition to exhibiting objects, certain museums also invite audiences to participate in planting, production and understanding of food culture through live demonstrations, seminars, events, workshops and discussions (Moon 2016; Williams 2013).

Cultural tourism and creative tourism are the most dynamically expanding areas of the tourism sector. In the theoretical chapter we review the definition of the two trends, the characteristics of the demand and supply side and clarify the concept of a cultural tourism product. We overview the development strategies that have defined the global museum market in recent decades and discuss the role of museums in the revitalization efforts of cities. You can also get a deeper insight in the operation of colourful science and transport museums. Afterwards, culinary tourism chapters examine consumer behaviour in food tourism and its link to social media which is followed by an overview on the supply side, a new typology of attractions in culinary tourism.
