Speed and effort as compared to HT

Students in their second year were asked about their experiences concerning time and effort again. Respondents (n = 12) had to indicate their answers on a 3-point scale (see Appendix 8, questions 12–14). It was hypothesised that the expected (neutral) answer to both questions would be “2”, that is, “PE is neither more nor less difficult (faster/slower) than HT”. One-sample t-tests were performed to reveal whether mean values diverged significantly from the expected mean (2). As for perceived difficulty, the one-sample t-test indicated a marginally significant difference between the hypothetical mean (M = 2) and the observed mean (M = 2.4, SD = 0.74, t(14) = 2.10, p = .055). This means that students perceived post-editing as easier than traditional, from-scratch, human translation.

The one-sample t-test showed that the observed mean (M = 2.73, SD = 0.46) for temporal efficiency was significantly higher than the hypothetical mean (M = 2) (t(14) = 6.20, p < .001), suggesting that students felt that post-editing was definitely faster than human translation.
