One aspect of the translation/post-editing process that is expected to change by the end of the training period is time on task. It is assumed that engaging in translation on a regular basis leads to the automatization of at least some of the sub-processes of translation (see, e.g., Göpferich, 2009; Hurtado Albir, 2017b; Shreve, 2006), which, in turn, leads to the speeding up of the whole translation process. To compare translation and post-editing times at the beginning and at the end of the training period, paired samples t-tests were applied. Test results showed a considerable time gain for human translators (M (time1) = 52.60 min, SD = 14.59 min, M(time2) = 44.78 min, SD = 7.06 min, t(7) = 2.030, p = .082), but significance was only trending. Post-editors worked somewhat faster in the second data collection wave than in the first one, too, but the difference was smaller and not significant (M (time1) = 39.80 min, SD = 13.66 min, M (time2) = 36.16 min, SD = 9.69 min, t(11) = 1.729, p = .112). It should also be highlighted that standard deviations became smaller in both groups (see SD values in the previous sentence), but particularly in the human translator group.

The question whether the time gain was significantly different between human translators and post-editors was analysed with the help of an independent samples t-test. First, a variable “time gain” was computed by subtracting “Time2” from “Time1”, and then an independent samples t-test was applied. The results showed that the difference was not significant (M (HT) = 7.83 min, SD = 10.91, M (PE) = 3.63 min, SD = 7.28, t(18) = 1.036, p = .314).

In addition, a one-way ANCOVA was conducted to determine whether the differences between human translators and posteditors on changes in time on task were statistically significant. After controlling for the time spent on the task in the first year, no significant effect of work mode (HT or PE) was found on second-year time on task values (F(1,19) = 0.671, p = .424).

When investigating time, the question arose whether there was a difference between students having English as a B and as a C language concerning time gains. Paired samples t-tests showed that B English students (n = 9) gained about 3 and a half minutes (M(time1) = 43.53 min, SD = 10.60, M (time2) = 39.97 min, SD = 4.66 min, t(8) = 1.369, p = .208), but the difference was not significant. Similarly, no significant differences were found for C English students (n = 15) (M(time1) = 44.80 min, SD = 16.20 min, M (time2) = 40.22 min, SD = 11.09 min, t(14) = 1.859, p = 0.84), although the time gain was somewhat larger (about 4 and a half minutes). The sub-samples were further divided into HT and PE subgroups, and descriptive statistics were calculated for them, but no statistical analysis was attempted as group sizes were extremely small. Descriptive statistics can be seen in Table 28, and they indicate that students in each group worked noticeably faster at the end of the training than at the beginning. Whether this is a recurrent pattern must be checked with further research.
