A múlt század radikálisan kibővítette a stílusok ősi fogalmát. A 20. század elején a stílus az addigi artisztikum- és retorika-központúságon túl már eszmei (ideológiai) vonásokat is magára vett. Később megjelentek, a század derekától pedig megszaporodtak az intellektuális stílusok mind a humán- és a természettudományokban, mind a filozófiában. Az ezredfordulóhoz közeledve pedig feltűntek az úgynevezett metastílusok is. A stílus fogalma ma már „rendszerek látens játékterét jelöli” – az esztétikáét és az ontológiáét, az ismeretelméletét és az egzisztenciafilozófiáét, mindezt „radikális pluralitással” (James, Rorty), olykor kétértelműen. Hiszen ha az ősi íróvessző, a stylus képét, amelynek éles hegye karcolt, spatulavége viszont törölt, metaforikusan visszafordítjuk a stílus fogalom mai használatára, mindkettőről elmondható a különös kétértelműség: eleje létezés, vége jelentés, eleje érzék, vége értelem, eleje egyedi, vége általános, eleje sajátos, vége különös, eleje jelenbeli, vége történeti. Ma a stílusok fogalmi határai, „eleje és vége” közt nincs biztos fogás, megragadható közvetítés. Nyilvánvaló, hogy átgondolásukhoz új elméleti keret szükséges. Erre a könyv a karakterstílusok, mintázatstílusok és ellenpontstílusok (metastílusok) fogalmának bevezetésével tesz javaslatot. Azt mutatja be, hogy rendszerük játéktere együtt fejez ki jelleget, készletet és választást immár a teóriák világában is.
