Abstract:

The subject of this study is the situation of education for sustainability in light of the 2012 and 2020 National Core Curriculum. Based on the innovations that have taken place on this topic in the field of public education over the past two decades, it can be assumed that both the content and the methodology of education for sustainability appear widely in framework curricula and do not depend only on the attitude of dedicated teachers. Experiences and conclusions also raise the responsibility of higher education in the modern education of sustainability pedagogy.

Since the introduction of the first National Core Curriculum (1995), the principles of environmental education have appeared as compulsory curriculum elements for all teachers. Over the past decades, the Eco-School title has set the milestones of defining institutional frameworks and introduced sustainability competence in teacher certification.

Since 2021, the subject of sustainability is optional in secondary schools, which gives students the opportunity to graduate with an exam in the subject in 2024. All of these are primarily the results of dedicated teachers and students.

Students must be taught environmentally conscious thinking in all subjects, including the primary scene of education, within the classroom. Content regulations (framework curricula, guidelines, core programs), aligned with the 2020 National Core Curriculum, only partially support the shaping of environmental attitudes in the classroom.

The next step is, therefore, substantive and methodological; hence, higher education is responsible. Shaping the positive environmental attitude of teachers coming out of universities has many opportunities. On the one hand, there is a need for extensive use of a methodology based on collective learning, and on the other hand, forms of community action must be ensured for all university citizens.
