Fluid Mechanics Measurements

Testing a wind tunnel fan by means of ad hoc measurements [58]

A fan rotor with circumferentially forward skewed blades was designed by Vad [59] for the open-type low-speed wind tunnel facility of the Hungarian Institute of Agricultural Engineering, Gödöllő, Hungary. The benefits of axial fan rotor blade sweep and skew, e.g. the extension of stall-free operational range, are summarised in [60]. The facility and the related fan were designed at the DFM, and were produced by Ventilation Works Ltd., Hungary in 2004. The facility was successfully installed and is in regular operation at present.

This lecture note aims at providing basic information on nowadays applied fluid flow measurement techniques, in terms of their operating principle, layouts, application areas, advantages, and limitations. As such, it intends to give an aid in decision-making when selecting instrumentation for the solution of various practical flow measurement problems, also providing hints for the actual realisation of the measurements.
