Market and Credit Risk Management

How High is the Risk?

In fact, the notion of risk proposed by Artzner, Delbaen, Eber and Heath (ADEH) 1 does not result in a precise and unambiguous definition of risk, but rather describes the interpretation of the extent of risk. This in effect goes back to the problem mentioned earlier. In fact, we have an intuitive idea of what risk is, but we cannot give an acceptable picture of it unless we know ‘how high’ it is. It is similar to our feelings about temperature: we talk about the difference between ‘cold’ and ‘hot’, but we cannot get a good grasp of the concepts until we have a thermometer in our hands to measure the temperature.
