The collocates contained in JIANG can be grouped into four meaningful categories: WEAPON MANUFACTURE, TRADE & EMPLOYMENT, TAIWAN ISSUE, TERRITORIAL DISPUTE, and STRATEGY DESIGN. It can be seen from Table 3 that the WEAPON MANUFACTURE, TRADE & EMPLOYMENT, and MILITARY STRATEGY categories occupy the majority of the collocates of China. This indicates that the two categories are the central position of the military construction of China during the Jiang Zemin period, thus attracting more attention from CMPRs. The collocates CSSC, CNNC, AVIC, North, corporation, industries, shipbuilding, aviation, base, industry, vehicle, embarked, build and produced all occur with China in contexts of weapon manufacture and employment; weaponry, contract, transfer, trading, signed, pursuing, offered and import collocate with China in the context of China’s arsenal trade, particularly with Russia. Concerning the MILITARY STRATEGY category, two humble military objectives, “to protect the periphery security interests” and “to ensure the survival of the leadership”, stand out. Despite that, other collocates included in this category are used with China to criticize China for intentionally staying ambiguous on key military sections to hide its ambitious nature. The rest two categories, TAIWAN ISSUE and TERRITORIAL DISPUTE, are relatively small in number, illustrating that they were not acute during the Jiang Zemin period. For the former category, CMPRs mainly argue that China seeks national reunification by escalating military deterrence and suppressing the international recognition of Taiwan, instead of negotiating on an equal basis, to dissuade leaders of Taiwan from promoting Taiwan’s independence, and persuade them to accept the terms offered by mainland China. As for the TERRITORIAL DISPUTE category, CMPRs in this corpus simply describe the disputes in the territorial waters of the East and the South China sea with relatively few details.
