A brief history of drinking water supply

The first water distribution piping networks were built in ancient Crete, which are probably the earliest drinking water pipelines, although there are earlier canals found in India and Mesopotamia [5], [6]. Around 250 BC, Archimedes proclaimed ’Eureka’ and the first law of physics concerning water, named after him, was born. Around 100 AD, Rome already used gravity aqueducts to transport water to its citizens (Figure 2.1).
