Business Management

Starting up, Growth, Development

Academic and practical definitions of family businesses

It is now widely accepted that automatically associating family businesses with small businesses in general is misplaced (Konczosné and Szombathelyi, 2014). However, definitions of family businesses tend to differ between countries, which still mitigates against a universal definition (Reisinger, 2013). Ninety different definitions of family businesses were identified in the European Union at the beginning of the 2000s from research mostly focused on family ownership and its role in business management (Mandl, 2008). At approximately the same time, research began to focus on the appearance of family members as employees in family run businesses and the intention of intergenerational transmission of ownership as additional conditions in family and business-related decision-making roles, as well as the business itself (Kotey, 2005). While incomplete and imprecise, two prime definitions are presented here from international literature. Firstly, Wimmer et al. (2004) defined family businesses as organizations in which a family or a family group has a decisive influence on the development of an enterprise. Alternately, Leach (2009) developed a classification system, whereby enterprises that are owned by families and which have wider relationships see themselves as businesses.
