Business Management

Starting up, Growth, Development

Generational change

The issue of succession is a central theme in family business theory and practice, since one of the most defining long-term strategic planning characteristics of family businesses is that managers wish to preserve family ownership for future generations (Drótos, Wieszt, 2019). Succession is typically problematic for several family enterprises when faced with this decision for the first time, especially those lacking a clear business-management identity, thereby also lacking sufficient experience in this area. Moreover, most enterprises might not even try to compensate for such lack of experience with a well-thought-out succession plan and may not suitably maintain an acceptable ownership share for the family. In Hungary, the number of family businesses is relatively small and such enterprises usually see possibilities for renewal presented by succession. In such cases they may ask for the help of external consultants, corporate interest protection organizations or academic researchers (Drótos, Wieszt, 2018).
