Business Management

Starting up, Growth, Development

Strategy in family business management

It is generally estimated that almost half of domestic traditional family businesses do not have a short- or long-term business strategy with key performance indicators (KPIs). Some owner/managers may believe that unwritten ‘ad hoc’ plans in their minds equate to business strategy, but in practice these are rarely manifested in the operation of a business. An ambivalent phenomenon can also be observed in strategy creation of family businesses providing knowledge-intensive services. In such cases, it is common to plan and follow a conscious strategy of building the future of the business. However, most do not plan for succession with the prospect of an expected generational change, such as ageing of the founding owner/manager. Moreover, a business that is planned, maintained and rendered suitable for further long-term operations may lose family ownership (Noszkay, 2017).
