Business Management

Starting up, Growth, Development

Data based international market activity of Hungarian enterprises

The Hungarian SME sector is characterized by strong heterogeneity. On one extreme there are ‘gazelles’ or enterprises with rapid growth potential, producing high added value in a short time period, while alternately there are numerous single-person enterprises, created for the purpose of survival and which do not typically strive for revenue growth. The number of self-employed persons has varied in recent years but is influenced by the creation of simplified forms of taxation for small businesses such as the introduction of ‘KATA’ in 2014.1 The share of capital necessary to form a private limited company was set at three million forints in 2014 but various measures make it difficult to establish social enterprises. In addition, it is increasingly necessary for Hungarian businesses to participate in the international economy, as outlined in later sections of this chapter. In many respects this is not a matter of choice, since the domestic market is relatively small and also because enterprises are often forced to enter international markets due to the nature of global trends, even though they may not have intended to do so upon inception. Nonetheless, in Hungary in general enterprises exist which have the potential to be truly successful on a global platform (Békés et al., 2013).
