Business Management

Starting up, Growth, Development

Typical models of SME internationalization

Prior to around 1970, trade between nation-states and internationalization activities of large corporations tended to form the main focus of applied business enterprise research. From then on, means of entering international markets became increasingly complex and subject to focused research on enterprises of all sizes including SMEs. This gathered force in the mid-1990s, when step models were identified beyond consideration of national economies and the export activities of large enterprises and applied to enterprise-size-specific international markets (Dunning, 1993). In the corpus of international literature, it was then recognized that interdependently with macro-economic changes then taking place such as creation of the EU single market as previously mentioned, SMEs assumed prominent roles as foreign investors. It follows that in general SME internationalization is subject to different drivers and characteristics than that of larger enterprises.
