Figure 8 shows the sources of knowledge of primary school teachers. The majority, 71%, works from their own experience accumulated over the years, 29% from experience abroad and only 10% from university studies.

From the answers to the open-ended questions in the questionnaires, here are some views expressed by primary school teachers on multilingual children:

  • “Often one language is stronger than the other (preference language medium), words and phrases are often mixed (English words are used in the Hungarian context), I often experience a delay in speech development, they need more help with conjugation.”
  • “They don’t learn the language, they master it. Speech and language are their strengths. Because they start very young, language acquisition is flexible and imperceptible.”
  • “They feel more comfortable around children and develop their vocabulary. They are open and creative when they have the right support from their teacher.”
  • “Children are much more communicative than us adults.”

Some mentioned delays in speech development and stressed that with the right support from the teacher, they are creative and open.
