When considering the undertaking of a language revitalization project, the efforts and steps necessary for success might seem relatively simple at first: increase the number of language speakers, increase the number of language usage scenarios, bolster the teaching and general adoption of the language. While these key points do indeed serve as major milestones, there is one extremely important aspect that often gets overlooked in such projects, yet it serves as arguably the most important part of the undertaking: the attitudes of the speakers towards the language itself, not to mention the other way around; how a language is perceived by the general public.

Both these points are of critical importance, and Bell (2013) argues that they should be given greater emphasis as such; the first stage of a project should then be dedicated to establishing the needs and attitudes surrounding the language in question. Before taking action, it would be prudent to examine the state of it: if the community of speakers does not feel the need to undertake a project for improvement or revitalization, then arguably the project would be doomed to fail from the start. As such, the main point of this paper is to further examine these notions, while providing a contemporary example for a relevant revitalization effort – with both perceptions of the language present.

When dealing with perceptions of languages, however, one must ensure that all relevant aspects are taken into considerations during such discussions, most notable the linguistic identities of the relevant speakers. If sufficient attention is given to this area, the speakers themselves might have a better understanding of why and how they use their language(s), and as such might be more receptive toward innovation and the re-introduction of a replaced L1.
