An LMS (Learning Management System) is an online learning platform whose main purpose is to manage course materials and courses, manage education and monitor the progress of learners. LMSs have a variety of features, such as the possibility to upload learning materials, evaluate tests and assignments, assess students, communicate and collaborate online. Online course platforms are web applications that allow courses to be created, published and sold over the Internet. Online course platforms are designed to present educational content in an efficient and interactive way, to increase the flexibility and accessibility of education, and to enable learners to learn at their own pace and in comfort. The LMS and the online course platform have similar functionalities, but the main difference is that the LMS focuses mainly on managing education and tracking learner progress, while the online course platforms focus on course design, production and marketing. An LMS is usually designed for internal use within a larger organisation or institution, whereas online course platforms are usually focused on public and commercial use.

Online course platforms provide pre-defined modules for the development of course content, which initially do not include specific course material. A wide range of modules are available, which can be adapted to different learning tasks and objectives. The more modules are available, the more varied courses can be created (Crossline, et al. 2018). Online course platforms are becoming increasingly popular because they allow users to learn about any subject, whether professional or hobby. Online course platforms are generally easy to use and have a wide range of features such as videos, interactive tests and games to support learning (Szabo, 2021).

Implementing an LMS offers institutions, organisations or companies a number of benefits, including faster content distribution, cost reduction and centralisation of content. LMS can streamline processes such as communication, improve the tracking of student progress and offer flexibility for on-demand learning. It also provides better learning outcomes through engagement and gamification, multimedia content delivery and integrated assessment of learning. The LMS is the best solution when learning needs to be measured, but a content management system is more appropriate when resources need to be allocated without measuring learning (Barreto, et al. 2020).

LMSs are also digital learning environments, but they are usually for internal use by an educational institution or company. LMSs generally have a higher level of functionality than online course platforms and allow teachers to create fully customised educational content that is easily accessible to students. Both online course platforms and LMSs have the advantage of offering users flexible learning options, making it easy for them to learn anytime, anywhere and on any device. They also allow users to move at their own pace and adapt the learning process to their own needs.

If we think of the online course interface as a virtual workbook, it is clear that we need to use a wide range of building blocks to ensure effective, efficient and experiential learning. The wide range of modules or blocks required for this purpose allows for an efficient and personalised design of different learning processes (McArdle, 2010).

The learning philosophy of Moodle, as a typical LMS, is ʻconnectivism’, which emphasises interactivity with content and other students. This engages the emotional and cognitive domains and allows for sharing experiences and building on prior knowledge. By designing knowledge-based courses, students can apply their skills effectively. When designing a course, consider learning objectives, student groups and effective interaction. Moodle is flexible and supports both collaborative and independent learning (Nash, Rice, 2022).

Online learning platforms and LMSs share many similar and different characteristics and it is important to understand the philosophy and, most importantly, the methodological functionality of each platform. This theoretical paper focuses on a factual comparison of the two different types of systems and illustrates the similarities and differences through concrete examples and key issues in educational methodology.
