4.2. Answering the research questions

The most important research question of this paper is whether access to a relatively rich (nine vowels) vowel system in addition to the simpler vowel inventory of Persian would be an advantage for the early bilingual Azerbaijani/Persian EFL learners in comparison to their monolingual Persian peers. The precursor experiment (Afshar, Van Heuven, 2022) had already established that the bilinguals assimilated the AE vowels in a different way than the monolinguals, possibly because their pronunciation of the vowel of Persian differs from that of the monolinguals under the influence of their first language, i.e., Azerbaijani. The bilinguals were also found to be sensitive to the centralized vowel qualities of AE vowels /u/, /o/, most likely because Azerbaijani has central vowels that do not exist in Persian. We predicted accordingly that the bilingual EFL learners might pronounce the vowels of American English in a different, and more nativelike, manner than the monolingual learners.

The results of the two experiments reported in this paper, however, show a remarkable similarity in both the production of the AE vowels (Experiment 1) and in the perceptual representation of these vowels (Experiment 2) for both groups of Iranian EFL learners. No indications of any difference were found between the two learner groups, so that the conclusion follows that having access to two languages (acquired at an early age) offers no advantage, at least not in the present situation.
