We are pleased to present the latest volume in our series, entitled Applied Linguistics in the 21st Century. This new English-language volume centers on a timely and highly relevant topic: the effects of politics and ideology on the translation of argumentative political newspaper articles. The significance of this subject within the field of applied linguistics in the 21st century can hardly be overstated. In our increasingly interconnected and globalized world, translation must no longer be regarded solely as a technical process of linguistic transfer between languages. Rather, it must also be understood as a critical and interpretive practice, one that can influence how information is perceived, how ideologies are disseminated, and ultimately, how social and political realities are constructed and maintained.

This monograph presents the findings of an original research study aimed at developing a translation-oriented analytical tool specifically designed for examining political and ideological bias in both source texts and their translated counterparts. The analytical framework, the Political Bias Screener, was applied to a selection of argumentative political newspaper articles and their translations, with the aim of identifying subtle shifts in tone, emphasis, and rhetorical framing. By combining insights from translation studies, critical discourse analysis, and political communication, this monograph contributes to a deeper understanding of the translator’s role in mediating politically sensitive content. It also provides practical tools and methodological guidance for researchers interested in examining the intersection of language, power, and ideology in media discourse. We believe that the results of this study, and the framework developed as part of it, will be of considerable interest to a wide range of readers, including educators, translation professionals, linguists, researchers, media analysts, and policy-makers.
