We are pleased to present a new volume of our series entitled Applied Linguistics in the 21st Century. Its topic is more important than ever, as globalisation has transformed cultural, social, political, and economic life, making intercultural communication skills essential for success. In this context, language teaching is no longer just about grammar and vocabulary: it also needs to help students develop cultural diversity awareness (CDA) and intercultural communicative competence (ICC). These skills mean being able to value cultural differences and to communicate effectively across different cultural settings—both of which are crucial in today’s interconnected world.

This monograph addresses these issues with clarity and depth. Building on Byram’s (1997) model of intercultural competence—attitudes, knowledge, skills, and action—it shows how learners can develop openness, empathy, respect, and the ability to engage critically with cultural diversity. In this way, the study demonstrates how English language teaching can contribute to global citizenship education.

The importance of this work lies in its broad relevance. It offers guidance for teachers who wish to move beyond surface-level references to culture, for schools aiming to adopt culturally responsive practices, and for teacher training programmes preparing educators to address intercultural issues with confidence. By treating culture teaching as a core part of language education, the book highlights how English teaching can also promote democratic values, human rights, and critical thinking.
