There are several open, controversial questions related to explicitation. One of these is whether explicitation can really be considered as a translation universal (Krüger, 2014). Baumgarten and her colleagues consider explicitation as a random phenomenon, rather than a universal characteristic of language mediation. They think that the reason behind explicitation is to meet the communicative and stylistic norms of the TL community, and that explicitation cannot be considered as a natural part of the translation process (2008).

The second controversial issue is related to motivations behind explicitation. There is only a limited body of results on the reasons motivating explicitation, as most of the investigations analyze SL and TL texts, and thus could only hypothesize reasons of explicitation (Gumul, 2017, p. 57).

In summary, based on Gumul’s survey (2017, p. 58), it can be stated that some authors consider comprehension processes during the translation process as the reasons of explicitation, whereas others state that translation norms are the reasons behind explicitation. According to Setton, explicitation is driven by reaching optimal relevance and by making the reader’s job easier (Setton, 1999), while others think that it can also be an individual translator’s decision or can result from the lack of experience of the translator (Gumul, 2017, p. 58).
