12.3.3 Summary of results related to explicitation in interpreting

Jegyzet elhelyezéséhez, kérjük, lépj be.!

It is not easy to compare the results of empirical studies into explicitation and to draw conclusions, as investigations were carried out for structurally different languages, and most of them worked with a small sample. The investigations used different taxonomies to classify explicitation shifts, and worked with different research questions.

However, some tendencies related to training and expertise and explicitation can be identified based on Gumul (2017) for SI, and Tang (2018) for CI. In SI, trainees explicitate to help their own SL text analysis, and to counterbalance problems stemming from the constraints of simultaneous interpreting. By the same token, Tang (2018) observed for CI that trainee interpreters compensated inadequate interpreting skills with explicitation. During A to B simultaneous interpreting, explicitation was a coping strategy, rather than a means to achieve optimal relevance (Gumul, 2017). In consecutive interpreting, the motivations for explicitation included gap filling and time management (Tang, 2018). In contrast, in CI professional interpreters seemed to focus more on the target audience, as their explicitation shifts aimed mostly at clarification (Tang, 2018). In addition, professional interpreters added more cohesive devices to the source language text than interpreter trainees (Tang, 2018).

The empirical studies into simultaneous and consecutive interpreting are summarized in Table 12.1.

In this chapter, my aim is to answer the following research questions:

Jegyzet elhelyezéséhez, kérjük, lépj be.!

  1. How does the frequency of occurrence of explicitation shifts change as interpreter trainees progress in their training?
  2. How does the pattern of explicitation shifts change as interpreter trainees progress in their training?
  3. Is there a move towards interpreting-specific explicitation operations in the consecutively interpreted Hungarian target language texts as students progress in their training?

My presuppositions, based on Bakti (2022a) and Gumul (2017), are the following. The proportion of interpreting-specific explicitation shifts will increase, and the overall number of explicitation shifts will also increase in the consecutively interpreted target language texts as students progress in their training.
