14.4.4 Evaluative comments: Senorita

Student Senorita was criticized for including filled pauses in her third semester performance both by trainers and the target audience, whereas her delivery was seen as clear and confident both by the trainers and by the target audience. Some also commented on her unclear articulation. There is no clear development mirrored in the evaluative comments given for her end of semester four performance, disfluencies and filled pauses are still mentioned. As concerns delivery, even though the target audience acknowledged her good tone and clear line of thought, they also mentioned that she didn’t sound confident. Her delivery received only negative comments from the trainers, who commented on her unclear articulation, accelerated speech and the fact that her delivery was not convincing.

For the quality of the target language text (style and register), her end of semester three segment received contradictory evaluations. One trainer thought of her performance as elegant [szép a nyelvi megformálás], while another thought of it as word for word translation, which is not based on meaning. Her end of semester four target language segment was evaluated as inaccurate when talking about majors at the university (egyéb mérnöki tanulmányok). At the beginning of the segment there was a restart, which was later corrected. Another trainer thought of her target text as well-formed, however, some register problems were also mentioned. In addition, some awkward collocations were present, such as mérnöki tanulmányok, and the word tanulmányok, used as the Hungarian equivalent for studies was also frequently and unnecessarily repeated.

In her retrospective comments about her end of the third semester performance, Senorita mentioned that the long list of majors in the SL text was an issue for her, together with finding the right Hungarian equivalent for life sciences. At the end of semester four, she reported issues related to long lists in the SL text and also word finding problems (Table 14.9).
