At the time the longitudinal study started, Matador had been learning Spanish (his B language) for 9 years, and English (his C language) for 17 years. He had spent more than one year in Spanish-speaking countries, for the purposes of studying, working and holidaying. He had spent more than a year in an English-speaking country. He had extensive interpreting experience before the longitudinal study started; he had interpreted between 6 to 20 days in the A to B and B to A language directions, and between 6 to 20 days in the C to A language direction.

From among the four students, Matador was the most verbose, his consecutively interpreted Hungarian target language texts were the longest. The fidelity of his target text did not change considerably through the interpreter training, the proportion of correctly rendered clauses ranged between 82 and 88%.

When interpreting the rich points in the source language texts, in their Hungarian renderings Matador gave correct renderings in about 80% of the cases after semesters two and four, and he resorted to omissions in the remainder of cases.

When interpreting enumerations, as student Matador progressed in his training, there was a gradual shift from the use of omissions and generalizations towards an increasing use of omissions.

In student Matador’s consecutively interpreted Hungarian target language texts, the frequency of incidence of ETDs was relatively low, the second lowest among the four interpreter trainees, and the same applies to the frequency of incidence of disfluencies. It has to be noted that in his target language texts, the frequency of incidence of disfluencies decreased as he progressed in his interpreter training. The most frequent ETDs in the consecutively interpreted Hungarian target language texts are grammar errors, false word and blends. The disfluency patter in his target language texts included repetitions, grammar errors and restarts.

Explicitation shifts per 100 words of the consecutively interpreted target language texts were the second highest in semester two, highest in semester three, and second highest in semester four in his recordings. In other words, he is an explicitating type. He most frequently used the explicitation operation of adding connectives. Interpreting-specific explicitation shifts, namely meaning specification, inserting hedges and inserting discourse-organising items, were dominant in the target texts recorded after semesters three and four.

He had the highest proportion of cohesive ties in his target language texts (cohesive ties for 100 words of TL text for reference).

Student Matador’s performance recorded at a later stage in training (semester 2 vs. semester 3) received better overall marks from both the target audience and the interpreter trainers. The overall ranking was considerably higher from the target audience for his third than for his second semester segment. The same applies to his marks for the style and delivery from the interpreter trainers for his target language texts.

The evaluative comments included mentions of filled pauses, disfluencies and long pauses in the consecutively interpreted Hungarian target language renderings of student Matador recorded at the end of semester two. Frequent repetitions and awkward collocations in his target language texts were also mentioned by interpreter trainers. In spite of that, he seemed to have made a good impression on the interpreter trainers, as his style and register was considered as interesting and accurate. For his semester three consecutively interpreted Hungarian target language rendering he received positive and negative comments, including grammar errors and the fact that his Hungarian texts need to be translated from Hungarian into Hungarian.
