As concerns consecutive interpreting, the topic of this monograph, there is limited background literature on research methodology problems specific to the research of consecutive interpreting. As concerns consecutive interpreting, the issues and challenges described in section 5.1 apply for this working mode as well, namely ecological validity, the setting, the sample size or participants, and the issue of quantifying data.

However, some CI-specific factors also need to be considered. The first one of these is the choice between short- or long-section CI, and a related factor, that is whether one wishes to examine note-taking as an additional variable or not. A second choice is related to the type of setting CI is carried out: is it at the conference interpreting/international end of the spectrum of interpreting or the community/dialogue /intra-social end of the spectrum of interpreting?
